Steve Bruce's squad then flew out for a tour of Germany between 18th and 26th July which began with a 5-0 victory against VFB09 Possneck on July 19th. Clinton Morrison bagged a hat-trick in that game with Stern John and Mikael Forssell the other scorers.
A four team 25 minutes each half mini-tournament with Bohemians Prague, FC Erzgebirge Aue and SpVgg Weiden followed this with the winners facing the winners of another mini-tournament comprising of Blackburn Rovers, SSV Reutlingen 05, SSV Ulm 46 and the Albanian National Side on Friday, July 23rd.
Blues lost their first 50 minute game 1-0 against German Second Division outfit FC Erzgebirge Aue at the Wasserwerk Stadium in Weiden but won the second game 4-1 against local side SpVgg Weiden. Stern John (2), Clinton Morrison and Andrew Barrowman the scorers.
The tour of Germany concluded with a disappointing 1-0 defeat against local side SSV Ulm on Friday, 23rd July.
On their return from the pre-season tour Blues travelled first to Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday, 28th July and after a goalless first 45 minutes, Mikael Forssell scored the only goal of the game with a 77th minute strike in front of over 8,000 fans at Hillsborough.
Hull City were the next opponents on Saturday, 31st July and Blues came away from the KC Stadium with a resounding victory. Clinton Morrison, Muzzy Izzet, an own goal by Tigers defender Damien Delaney and a Robbie Savage penalty helping Blues to a comfortable 4-1 win. Summer signing Jesper Gronkjaer made his Blues bow in this game.
The list of pre-season friendlies away from St. Andrews wound-up with a trip to to face Exeter City on Tuesday, 3rd August and after a goalless first forty five minutes Blues ran out 2-0 winners. Mikael Forssell and Emile Heskey the scorers at St James Park.
On Saturday, 7th August Blues played their only pre-season friendly at St Andrew's against Spanish side Osasuna and on a boiling hot day the game finished 1-1. Jamie Clapham cancelling out the Spanish sides opener five minutes from time.
