Man City Res 2 - Blues Res 1

Last updated : 01 September 2003 By Brian Cartlidge
Blues started brightly and took the lead on thirteen minutes when a long kick up-field by Ian Bennett fell nicely for Craig Fagan to latch onto - he rounded City keeper Carlo Nash to place into an empty net.

City then threw men forward in search of an equaliser and levelled on thirty five minutes through Shaun Wright-Phillips. He hit the ball with the outside of his foot from just outside the box and the flight of the shot deceived Bennett and curled into the top corner.

Man City took the lead just before half-time when Darren Huckerby took a short corner to Ali Benarbia, the ball fell kindly back to the corner taker and his first time shot took a deflection off Bryan Hughes before finding the back of the net to put City 2-1 up.

That was to be the end of the goal scoring action although Blues had chances to take a point from the game. Fagan should have at least tested Nash with a free header inside the box but directed it downwards and it bounced over the crossbar and Capaldi elected to cross rather than shoot from yards out, after Nash had fumbled a cross.
