This week's man in the middle - Steve Dunn
Dunn has been around for some time and is, in my opinion, one of the better refs on offer.
Aside from the fact it was a local derby, today's game was never going to be pretty. Albion are fighting for their lives and host a selection of players who wouldn't look out of place at the local boxing gym.
The game started off slowly as Blues appeared to show nerves. This was reflected in some untimely tackles, especially from Salif Diao who frequently gave away possession and then hunted down the recipient who was promptly hacked down for accepting the midfielder's gift ball.
Diao eventually found his way in to the book for a rash tackle on Kieron Richardson.
The game was lacking in every aspect but the ref tried his best to let play flow, even if the players didn't. There was no petty pointing to the exact blade of grass yet the ref made sure the ball wasn't advanced 5 yards forward.
Dunn allowed the game to continue to see if Birmingham could gain any advantage, despite a foul. When it was clear no advantage had been obtained, he stopped play and brought the game back for a free kick. Why can't more refs do this?
Kenny Cunningham was lucky to escape a card. Not for any particular offence, but for constantly trying to grapple and manhandle any Albion player in possession. His battles with the robust Geoff Horsfield saw him second best, as the big centre forward used his strength and know how to bully Cunningham off the ball and yet make it look like the Blues defender was the offender.
The second half got a bit niggly but Dunn handled the players well. This was evident by the lack of dissent from those on the pitch. If the ref gets it wrong, players argue.
Richardson, Zoltan Gera and Neil Clement all got away with a quick succession of two footed tackles on Blues players. Ronnie Wallwork tried the same a few minutes later but got a yellow for his troubles.
Dunn seems to enjoy reffing games without getting in the way of the game. More of the same from the other officials please.
