"Obviously our aim this season is to simply survive in the Premiership as a first step.
"But it's interesting that we are only one point behind Villa because that shows how we are closing the gap on them.
"We want to be the top dogs around here. It is as simple as that as far as I am concerned," he added.
"Rivalry is very good for the area, but I'm not talking about the kind of rivalry that spilled over into bad blood in the two games against Villa."
