The Blues defender made the breakthrough into the full England squad, gaining his first of six caps in the friendly against South Africa last February, and was part of every squad named by Sven-Göran Eriksson after that up until the last England international friendly against Portugal last month.
Competition for places in the heart of the England defence is high with John Terry, Sol Campbell, Gareth Southgate, Jonathan Woodgate, Ledley King and Upson amongst those vying for inclusion in the party for the campaign in Portugal this summer.
