Savage to play in Fulham game

Wales' boss Mark Hughes had attempted to invoke the four-day rule for Wales' European 2004 qualifying game against Azerbaijan on November 20th meaning that Savage would have had to join up with the squad on the same day as Blues' Premiership game with Fulham.

However, Blues' Football Secretary Julia Shelton appealed directly to world football's governing body FIFA on behalf of the club, and they ruled that (under Article 36 Paragraph 2a) Wales only had the right to call on Savage 48 hours before their qualifier, because it was due to be played on a date set-aside for friendlies.

Wales game with Azerbaijan was originally scheduled to be played next June, but that date was brought forward because of the weather conditions in the state at that time of year.

Blues boss Steve Bruce told www.bcfc.com: "Every manager wants their best players available and I am no different.

"His availability for the Fulham game is a big boost to the team. Robbie has done everything that we expected from him since he signed in the summer.

"His enthusiasm for the game, his willingness to work and his unselfishness in getting around the pitch is why we brought him here."
