"I have known Robbie since he was a kid and know what I am getting," boss Steve Bruce told Sky Sports News.
"He will be a marvellous acquisition for the club.
"I am delighted to have someone of his quality who has played in the Premiership for five years.
"It shows our intentions, we are in the market for some good players who can help the squad.
"I said at the end of last season the players in the squad will be given a chance, but we do need a bigger squad.
"The first year is always the biggest and we have to bridge the gap as quick as we can. Robbie will give us every chance."
