Savage has stepped up his training this week after missing Blues' win at Bolton last weekend with a recurrence of an Achilles injury.
The Wales international midfielder sustained the injury in the home game against Portsmouth last month and was forced to sit-out the two following games against Manchester Utd and Chelsea.
He made a surprise return to the side for the local derby game with Villa on October 19th but aggravated the injury forcing him out of the game at The Reebok last Saturday.
Savage, who was named in the Wales squad earlier this week for their forthcoming Euro 2004 play-off games against Russia, will now be given until Sunday to prove whether or not he is fit for selection for the televised game against Alan Curbishley's in-form Charlton side at St. Andrew's on Monday night.
"I know Sav is thinking of the Wales games coming up. They have got two huge matches, probably two of the biggest in their history, and if he is fit to play in them, then fine," said Blues boss Steve Bruce.
"Will we leave it to him for Monday? No!
"Sav will have to meet the stipulations we set down to him and I’ll make a decision on Sunday as to whether he will be fit enough to play against Charlton.”
