Rowett Hangs His Boots Up

Last updated : 06 July 2004 By Brian Cartlidge

Thirty-year-old Rowett spent close on two years at St. Andrews before moving on to Leicester City in July 2000.

Born in Bromsgrove on 6th March 1974 Rowett began his playing career as a trainee at Cambridge Utd before signing professional forms at the Abbey Stadium in September 1991.

After making more than 50 league and cup appearances for Cambridge a £200,000 move took him to Everton in May 1996.

However, the versatile defender failed to settle on Merseyside and after just two appearances for the Toffeemen he was loaned out to Blackpool.

Derby County was the next stop for Rowett - a £300,000 move from Everton taking him to the Baseball Ground (Derby's old ground).

Rowett went on to make 120 appearances for The Rams before Blues boss of the time Trevor Francis brought him to St Andrews in a £1million deal in August 1998.

A popular figure with Blues fans Rowett, who was comfortable playing at either right-back or centre-back, was named in the PFA Nationwide League Division One team of the year for 1999-2000.

He went on to make over 100 appearances for Blues, scoring 11 times, before his desire to play in the top-flight saw him move to Leicester in July 2000 for what was then a record transfer fee of £3million.

Twenty-two months and more than 50 games later Rowett made a £2.5 million move to Charlton Athletic.

Since his move to South London, Rowett has had a nightmare time with injuries and during his two years at The Valley he managed just 13 league and cup appearances.
