The Blues centre-back was sent-off after a clash with Fulham striker Luis Boa Morte following the Blues equaliser in the 2-2 draw with the Cottagers last Sunday.
After viewing the incident on video, the Blues had hoped to have the decision overturned but that has not been the case.
A statement on the FA's official website reads: "We can confirm that Birmingham defender Darren Purse's appeal against his sending-off against Fulham has been unsuccessful.
"He will therefore serve a three-match suspension for violent conduct."
Purse's three-game ban means he misses next months games with Man Utd (a), Chelsea (h) and Villa (h).
