Newspaper reports on Tuesday morning have suggested that Blues boss Alex McLeish is to run-the-rule over the 21-year-old former Rams winger who had his contract at Pride Park cancelled by mutual consent last week.
Barnes has struggled with injuries in recent seasons and spent the final four months of last season on loan at Fulham but failed to make a single appearance for Roy Hodgson's side because of his lack of fitness.
