Its been noticeable that the 20-year-old Blues midfielder has been missing recently from Mick McCarthy's side so I asked John Jenkins, editor of the Sunderland Mad website for a lowdown on how Carter had been doing during the first two months of his loan spell on Wearside.
"Darren has done OK, but he normally only makes the bench, if that," he said.
"He's been operating on the left wing mainly, due to George McCartney being out injured and Julio Arca dropping into left back.
"With us having Julio Arca, it's very hard for Darren to get a game. Arca could walk into the vast majority of the Premierships starting 11's and has ability far beyond the Championship.
"What I will say, is Darren's work rate is very good and he works tirelessly, but I find he lacks pace.
"I believe that McCarthy will be keen to keep a hold of Darren on loan, but only as a squad player. I don't believe any attempt will be made to make the move permanent.
"Carl Robinson is out for a month after having a nose op, so I expect Darren to partner Jeff Whitley in the centre on midfield during his absence.
"The majority of Sunderland fans don't really see him as one of the better players in our squad, but I believe he has always done what is asked of him when called upon."
