The Blues skipper has decided to quit following Ireland's failure to qualify for the World Cup finals in Germany next year.
Brian Kerr's side needed to beat Switzerland on Wednesday night to have any hopes of reaching next years finals but played out a 0-0 draw at Landsdowne Road meaning they will finish fourth in the Group Four table.
"It is the end of the road for me, without a doubt," Cunningham said after the game.
"I don't want to dwell on it too much on what is a hugely disappointing night for the entire group."
