Bruce said: "It was imperative that we got a result on the day."
"We had a lot of chances and overall we deserved the win. I was satisfied with the first appearances of Paul Devlin and, in particular, Stern John.
"I was delighted that John was able to mark his debut with a winning goal."
Bruce, is however, concerned that Blues face the prospect of playing nine games in 29 days next month and as Blues play most of the leading clubs in this period, he feels it is unfair to ask his players to play in such a congested programme.
He said: "We have asked the FA to put the re-arranged game against Crewe back into April to ease our fixture list.
"In the circumstances we are hoping that common-sense will prevail."
Blues' first win in six matches and moves the side to within four points of the play-offs with two games in hand on sixth-placed Crystal Palace.
