Bruce has limited resources

Bruce is keen to strengthen the squad in an effort to keep Blues in the Premiership but Sullivan has ruled out the possibility of a major spending spree in January.

"We hope to bring some people in after Christmas but we cannot be loading ourselves with bills," he told the B'ham Evening Mail.

"There will be limited resources available to the manager and just how much depends on the amount of points we have accumulated by then. If we win games everything's rosy, if we are losing games then it's a bit scary.

"I think our points total at present is about right. It's what we've deserved. To be honest, my biggest fear is that we are cast away and isolated from everyone else but I would say to people that we anticipate staying up.

"If we don't, then we have done our figures so that we can keep the bulk of the team together, as long as the supporters stay with us and renew their season tickets."

"There is a cold wind blowing for football, just look at the trouble the Ipswichs, Derbys and Leicesters have got in. You cannot spend a pile of money because if you get relegated, you've had it.

"If a Villa or West Ham went down, the effect on their finances would be catastrophic. I hate to say this but it would almost be good for football if a Premiership club ceased to exist , and let me tell you, some are close to the edge.

"You cannot keep on having clubs re-juggling their debts, deferring payments, going into administration and carrying on. A lot of First Division clubs are at risk this Christmas when their season ticket and television money goes."
