Blast From The Past - Burnley

Last updated : 05 April 2007 By Brian Cartlidge
Despite Andrew Johnson scoring twice Blues were narrowly beaten at St.Andrew's by current Division One leaders, Burnley.

Blues twice came from behind but were eventually beaten by a second half Burnley goal against the run of play.

Burnley opened the scoring after ten minutes with a magnificent strike from Glenn Little.

Martin Grainger allowed Little to cut in from the wing and power a superb shot past Alan Kelly from 25 yards out.

Blues were level less than ten minutes later, when Stan Lazaridis crossed an excellent ball in from the left, which was headed past Michopoulous in the Burnley goal by Andy Johnson.

Blues then went close to taking the lead - Michael Johnson going close with a header.

Johnson was then first into the referee's notebook for a poorly timed tackle.

Burnley took the lead after 34 minutes when Ian Moore turned Johnson before running into the box and firing past Kelly.

AJ then made the score level on 40 minutes with a first class goal. Bryan Hughes ran from the half way line, before releasing AJ in the box. AJ used his pace to leave the Burnley defence flat-footed and put a low shot past Michopoulous.

Burnley almost took the lead again on the stroke of half-time, when Gareth Taylor missed an easy header.

Trevor Francis made two changes for the second half. Joey Hutchinson replaced Bragstad, who had a bad first half and Curtis Woodhouse replaced skipper Martin O'Connor.

Blues began to create a number of chances, with Geoff Horsfield and AJ both going close.

Burnley's third goal and Little's second came after 72 minutes, the Burnley forward firing in a deflected shot from the left corner of the 18 yard box after poor defending by Johnson and Hughes.

Blues began to push for an equaliser and Michael Johnson went close with a header.

There was an appeal for a penalty by the Blues players towards the end when the ball seemed to strike Gareth Taylors arm in the box but the referee waived away their protests.

AJ almost had his hat-trick in injury time, but his shot was parried away by Burnley 'keeper Michopoulos.
